From the Walls of Peking

From the Walls of Peking

We print below a section of The Fifth Modernization,  a dazibao  or wall journal, which appeared in Peking several months ago. The English version is taken from a French translation from the Chinese, printed in Esprit,  the independent left magazine that appears in Paris.

The author, who uses the pseudonym of  Jin Sheng, has also written a document on the political prison of  Quincheng where, in the time of  Mao, purged political prisoners were kept. Sheng himself was arrested on March 29, 1979, in the suppression of  the “excesses” ofdemocracy.

The remaining introductory remarks are by Claude Widor,  taken from Esprit:

Socialist thought provides us with an imaginative and moral horizon.
