Submission Guidelines

We welcome submissions, both for the website and for the print magazine. They may be sent to submissions [at] Please note: Due to high volume, we are currently unable to confirm receipt of submission. We do not consider unsolicited pitches, simultaneous submissions, fiction or poetry submissions, or book excerpts, and will not be able to reply to submissions that do not meet our guidelines.

The best way to learn what may suit Dissent is simply to read the magazine and the website. We accept writing on politics, economics, and culture. We discourage footnotes. Articles in print and online typically run from 2,500 to 3,500 words. Blog posts can be as short as 750 words.

Dissent takes pride in cultivating talented new writers who now contribute to the New Yorker, the Nation, the New York Review, the London Review, and the New York Times. We take pleasure in bringing new writers into the magazine, and make an effort to read and reply to every submission, though this may not always be possible. If you do not hear back from us within 2–3 weeks and decide to send your submission elsewhere, please let us know. If you have any questions, please write to inquiries [at]
