There is not space enough to answer all of Martin Kilson’s characterizations of myself and my essay. Some of these go to the heart of the question as to why I wrote the essay itself. Let me say in this regard that the integration of elite universities in the late twentieth century is an important part of the democratization of American institutions. That in and of itself would make the observation of black students on white campuses of historical as well as topical interest.
