Enemy Colleagues: A Reading of the Salvadoran Tragedy

Enemy Colleagues: A Reading of the Salvadoran Tragedy

We print this remarkable article—perhaps the most comprehensive portrait yet drawn of the inner workings of Salvadoran politics—as part of a group commissioned by the Mexican monthly Vuelta, edited by Octavio Paz, and the Foundation for the Study of Independent Social Ideas, the publisher of Dissent. The articles are scheduled to appear as a booklet in the near future.

Gabriel Zaid is a distinguished Mexican writer and social critic. His article was written several months ago and therefore does not take up more recent developments. In recent weeks ominous statements have come from Secretary Haig about the possibility of widening the war in El Salvador, intervening militarily, etc. These statements make all the more cogent Mr. Zaid’s conclusion warning against such policies.
Since we know this article is likely to arouse strong feelings, we declare ourselves ready to print any serious, documented refutation that may be submitted. -— Eds.
