A Case for Market Socialism: What Does It Mean? Why Should We Favor It?

The term “market socialism” has no unique reference. It is a blanket term that has emerged to cover all versions of socialism in which markets are given a significant role to play. If there is any community of view among market socialists, it is simply that markets are not automatically to be identified with capitalist markets, and may have a number of properties that all socialists should be willing to find attractive. Since this bare assertion still provokes dissent in some quarters, we will begin by outlining the essential case for markets before going on to look at many of the qualifications that have to be entered.
