Support Dissent As We Celebrate Our 56th Year

Dear Friends,

You know that any time is the right time for dissent, because no matter who is in power, someone has to speak up for fairness and equality and justice.

But this time of year always has special significance for Dissent because it was fifty-six years ago this month that a group of politically engaged intellectuals sent the first issue of the magazine to the printer. It’s also a time when we ask you to renew their–and your–commitment to “to speak for the spirit of democratic utopianism that runs like a bright thread through America’s intellectual life.”

We’ve just lived through an amazing twelve months in American politics, one of enormous hope, dashed expectations, significant gains, recrudescent racism and red baiting, and great potential.

Whether you follow us online or in print, you’ve read provocative political and cultural analysis that truly represents our name. We dissent from each other as well as from the mainstream; and we have brought you important essays on the withdrawal from Iraq, gay rights, the financial crisis, and the legacy of 1989.

If you want to keep reading Dissent, we ask you to send us a birthday gift of $5, $10, $50, $56 (for each year of publication), $100, or more. Even better, pledge that amount each month. And while you’re at it, send us a note about what you liked or didn’t like this year.

You know that the Web is free to you, but not free to us, and even our low introductory subscription rate of $20 for the print magazine does not cover the true costs of production.

You can depend on us to bring you thoughtful and often unexpected commentary. Can we depend on you to keep us going?

Please donate now.

With best wishes,
