Dissent welcomes unsolicited essays and book reviews for its quarterly print magazine and shorts, essays, and interviews for its more frequent online counterpart, Dissent Upfront. We accept submissions by post [310 Riverside Drive, Suite 2008 New York, NY 10025] and e-mail [submissions(at)dissentmagazine.org].
• If you send your submission via e-mail, please specify whether it is an article or a book review by putting either "Article Submission" or "Book Review Submission" in subject line. If you send by post, be sure to keep a copy of your manuscript and please remember that we only consider articles accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
• Please don't write to ask whether we're interested in such and such an article. Look at our last few issues to see if your idea fits in. Or take a chance and send us your article.
• Your manuscript should be double-spaced with wide margins. Check all your figures, dates, names, etc.—they are the author's responsibility. Please use inclusive language so that we don't have to make adjustments during editing.
• Notes and footnotes should also be typed double-space on a separate sheet. As we’re not an academic journal, we prefer that footnotes, wherever possible, be dropped altogether or worked into the text.
• We try to respond quickly but receive a large number of submissions and responses will take one to three months. Often, if there is a delay longer than two months, it's because editors are reading your article.
• To get an idea of what we're interested in, read our print and Web-only articles. Online articles and shorts should have more immediacy than our quarterly print articles, though we still expect them to be incisive and well written. Online essays are usually closer in form and content to our lengthier print articles; shorts are more comparable to the succinct, 'back of the book' pieces found in our notebook section and the opinion pieces of a daily newspaper.
• Online essays and interviews usually run between 1,500 and 3,000 words.
• Shorts usually run between 500 and 1,500 words.
• If you send your submission via e-mail, please specify whether it is intended as an online essay or a short by putting either "Online Essay Submission" or "Online Short Submission" in the subject line.
• Please briefly summarize your article and relevant experience in your cover letter.
• For our online features, we encourage submissions on cultural and literary criticism as well as analysis of foreign and domestic politics and will also consider photo essays and interviews. We do not consider fiction or poetry.
• Due to limited financial resources, there is no payment for online content.
• We do not consider simultaneous submissions.
• For style, please consult the Chicago Manual of Style
• If an online or print article is time sensitive and there has been no response in seven business days, please send a follow-up e-mail to editors(at)dissentmagazine.org.
