The Summer 2013 issue of Dissent marks the premiere of Front Matters, a new section of cultural criticism. To celebrate the new issue and the new section, we are hosting a conversation tonight at 7 p.m. with three of our contributors about how economic crisis and political ideology are shaping culture in the United States and Europe:

Max Holleran (Ph.D. candidate in sociology, NYU) places Spanish “starchitects” in the context of the country’s real estate bubble and the wider European crisis.

Sally Davies (associate editor, Nautilus) surveys the evolving depictions of class in director Michael Apted’s Up series and its most recent installment, 56 Up.

Nick Serpe (online editor, Dissent) explores the “underground economy” in the U.S. through reality TV shows like Repo Games and Pawn Stars.

Join us tonight at 61 Local (61 Bergen St, Brooklyn, near the F and G trains) for drinks and discussion! Free andĀ open to the public. Click here to RSVP on Facebook.
